The Very Hungry Caterpillar at Children 1st @ Hathern
Even after over 50 years since the story was created by Eric Carle, the ravenous caterpillar is still on the hunt for food!
The early years, like generations before them, have loved sharing the story of the hungry caterpillar and finding out what it eats as it munches its way through the week.
We’ve used this all-time classic story book as a spring board for finding out about life cycles and to inspire other early years activities.
As well as finding out about the life cycle of the butterfly, the children made name caterpillars, and worked on their pencil control, forming recognisable letters. They also looked at different sizes of caterpillars and ordered them by length.
In our yoga session, the children acted out the life cycle of a butterfly. They began by curling up into a cocoon, then opening up into a caterpillar and then a butterfly.
