Hopscotch and Broad Beans at Children 1st @ Buckinghams

It seems such a long time ago when the Early Years were busy planting their broad bean seeds in spring.

Since then the children have been watering their young plants and taking care of them and, just like that, our beanstalks grew and grew, rather like the one in the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

We had lots of broad beans on our stalks so, after carefully harvesting the bulging pods, we opened them up to see what was inside and counted the beans. Well done everyone, great growing!

One of our favourite games at Buckinghams is hopscotch. We brought the game indoors and combined it with helping the children to practice their phonic skills. The children took it in turns to throw the beanbag and hop to the letter the beanbag had landed on. They then had to say the letter out loud, do the correct phonics action for the letter and name a word beginning with that letter.

The children were amazing. Their bean bag throwing was impressive and they followed this through with showing us some great phonic knowledge. With good words such as ‘a for aeroplane’, ‘t for tower’ and ‘p for princess’ they showed what a talented bunch they are!
