Author Shares ‘Wing Commander AB’ Story at Children 1st @ Meir Park
Richard Bland, author and photographer visited Meir Park recently to share with the children his debut book about the exciting adventures of Wing Commander AB, an intrepid bear who has enjoyed flying with jet pilots from air forces around the world. As an associate member, Richard linked up with the 1V (AC) Squadron at RAF Valley to launch the book which although full of adventures, has an important message about the importance of talking to our families in times of need.
Called ‘AB Gets His Wings,’ the book was written following a family tragedy and after receiving counselling from the Dove Service, Richard decided to create the book to help children begin to realise the importance of mental health and well-being. The proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Dove Service.
Wing Commander AB (named after Richard’s son Andrew) has certainly had plenty of adventures and the children were keen to hear about them and to see some photographs of the planes he has flown in. As well as flying with the Valley squadron, the bear has taken to the skies with the Australian Air Force, joined F-35 Lightning pilots in the US and taken part in a London Marathon. He has even flown with Prince William who has a copy of the book.
We were delighted to welcome Richard to nursery and to share this special book before it has hit the shops. We’re hoping that the book is a huge success so that plenty of money is raised for the Dove Service. Richard is planning to add more books to the series and we’re looking forward to reading the further adventures of the flying bear, Wing Commander AB.
Now, as you all know we have our own very special bear in nursery. Mr Harvey Bear, the Children 1st healthy eating mascot and he was keen to get in on the action. Richard has been extremely kind and has taken Mr Harvey away for an adventure of a lifetime, taking him to fly in a plane with one of the many pilots that he and Wing commander AB know. Richard has also said he would save us a copy of the book which will be flown in various different planes, with signatures, photographs and certification to go with it. We’re looking forward to hearing about Mr Harvey’s adventures when he returns to nursery. We’ll make sure we share the photos with you!
How wonderful to have Richard come and visit us and to be so generous! We are really grateful to him making time to visit us.
‘AB Gets His Wings’ is published by silverwoodbooks.co.uk on 12 August and we’re sure Richard would appreciate everyone’s support.
The photographs show a selection of the planes in which Wing Commander AB has flown. You can see the bear clearly in one of the photos.
